Bicycling in
Blackstone River Valley is more than recreation;
it’s discovering the convergence of hidden
history, captivating culture and learning about
the people and places making up the region.
Based on
popular demand, two new Blackstone Valley
Leisurely Bicycle Tours are being set this
summer for August 13 and October 15, 2011. These
tours will traverse along 8 miles of the
Blackstone River bikeway and 2 miles of roadway
from the Blackstone River State Park Visitor
Center, located off Interstate 295 north,
Lincoln, RI to Woonsocket, RI.
Enjoy a fun and
relaxing experience while exploring the
fascinating heritage of an urban and rural
landscape. Participants will head north through
mill villages of Albion and Manville, passing
along important sites of local and regional
interest.
Cyclists will
travel through Woonsocket’s Main Street Arts &
Entertainment District to learn the history of
the city’s “old downtown” and stop at Market
Square for a visit to the Museum of Work &
Culture.
Following the
museum visit, riders will make their way back to
the Lincoln Visitor Center.
Tours run 9
am-12 noon, cost is $20/person and are led by
Dr. Robert D. Billington, president of the
Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. The tour
price includes admission to the Museum of Work &
Culture.
The bicycle
tour lasts 3 hours, but no need to worry – they
take a very leisurely pace, stop often and are
appropriate for all fitness levels. Tours speak
to the history, culture, manufacturing and
little known facts and stories while riding
through charming back streets.
There are also
other bicycle tours happening in the summer
touring heritage and cultural sites in the
Blackstone River Valley.
